The Droid Turbo has been Announced. Time to Geek Out!

By Rich W Woods

Today Motorola announced what The Verge inaccurately described as a “souped-up Moto X”. I’m not sure why they would say this. Maybe because it has a similar display?

Anyway, the Droid Turbo seems to be a powerhouse. It uses a 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805 processor, the same that is used in the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Nexus 6. It will use a 21 MP rear camera, 2 MP front camera, a 5.2″ AMOLED display, and it will record video. According to GSM Arena, it will run Android 4.4.2, but I’m sure that is a misprint and it will run Android 4.4.4.

Droid Turbo: Specs

Processor 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805
Display 5.2″, 1440p, 565 ppi, AMOLED
Body 143.5×73.3×7.8 mm, 169 g
Camera 21 MP, 2 MP Front
Video 4K – 24 fps
Storage 32/64 GB
RAM 3 GB
Battery 3,900 mAh
Price $199/$249 on Contract with Verizon

These are the specs that we know. It would really be a shame if Motorola doesn’t include a setting for 1080p video at 60 fps.

I’m not sure why everyone is so quick to call everything that’s made by Motorola a <insert adjective here> Moto X. So far, the Moto G is a cheap Moto X, the Nexus 6 is a big Moto X, and the Droid Turbo is now a souped-up Moto X. While the design of the phones may be similar, none of them have the software features of the Moto X or even the customization options.

The Droid Turbo is exciting, but only if you use Verizon. No one likes carrier exclusives. Remember the HTC First? No? How about the Amazon Fire Phone? What about the iPhone? Oh, wait…
