The Droid Turbo has been Announced. Time to Geek Out!

By Rich W Woods

Today Motorola announced what The Verge inaccurately described as a “souped-up Moto X”. I’m not sure why they would say this. Maybe because it has a similar display?

Anyway, the Droid Turbo seems to be a powerhouse. It uses a 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805 processor, the same that is used in the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Nexus 6. It will use a 21 MP rear camera, 2 MP front camera, a 5.2″ AMOLED display, and it will record video. According to GSM Arena, it will run Android 4.4.2, but I’m sure that is a misprint and it will run Android 4.4.4.

Office 365 Subscribers will now get Unlimited OneDrive Storage

By Rich W Woods

Back in mid-July, Microsoft announced that Office 365 users would receive a whole terabyte of OneDrive storage. They even changed the amount of free storage from 5 GB to 15 GB.

There is nothing new for free account users, but Office 365 subscribers will now get unlimited storage, and it was done in true Microsoft fashion. They gave users 1 TB, pundits said, “Why would they do 1 TB? Why not just make it unlimited?” and Microsoft rebranded.

You can sign up for a preview of unlimited storage by clicking here. I’m not sure why they bothered to make a preview program. I guess it’s for if you happened to be at your terabyte limit.

Amazon announces Fire TV Stick for just $20, and it’s not a Chromecast

By Rich W Woods

Amazon this morning announced a new HDMI dongle. It will be priced at $39. Sound a bit like Chromecast? It’s called the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

All morning, I’ve been scrolling my Twitter feed seeing headlines like “This is Amazon’s $39 Streaming Stick, and it’s just like Chromecast”. This is simply not true. First of all, if you’re a Prime member, it’s $20 until Wednesday.

Second of all, Chromecast is the only device that does what it does. A user must open an app on their phone that supports Chromecast and cast it to their Chromecast. After that, the user must control the video through their phone. This can be frustrating as some apps do a better job of supporting Chromecast than others.

Retailers Shutting Off NFC Terminals to Block Apple Pay

By Rich W Woods

Mobile payments are nothing new. Android and Windows Phone have made use of mobile payments for years. It wasn’t until Apple invented mobile payments with Apple Pay that it really got mainstream support (see what I did there?).

Apple Pay came to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus via iOS 8.1 on Monday, October 20. They actually did a really good job. It’s integrated into the operating system so even if the phone is asleep, it wakes up to pay with Apple Pay.

Microsoft Releases Second Build of Windows 10 Preview

By Rich W Woods

Less than a month ago on October 1, Microsoft released the technical preview of the next version of Windows, Windows 10. It brought back the start menu as well as adding some new functionality such as multiple desktops.

Over the last week, Microsoft has been rolling out their first major update to the Windows 10 Technical Preview. The new build number is 9860, and considering that it’s only 19 builds higher than the previous public build, it’s quite a feat that they added 7,000 new features.

Apple SIM: A False Prophet (or Why they Did It)

By Rich W Woods

Shortly after Apple’s iPad Air 2 announcement, reports started showing up all over the Internet that the LTE variants of both the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3 would ship with a new Apple SIM card. It was a SIM that gave users that ability to choose between T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T. It was going to bring the carriers to their knees, forcing cheaper prices of data for the unwashed masses.

That’s right. The masses would pay less for their data plans and would finally be able to afford to wash themselves.

The iPad Mini 3: Why not to Buy It

By Rich W Woods

At Apple’s announcement, they unveiled the iPad Air 2. They spent a whole lot of time talking about it and it would really make one wonder why they hadn’t yet mentioned the iPad Mini 3 yet. I had been entertaining the idea that they would cancel the iPad Mini line as developers can no longer test apps on an iPad Mini simulator.

After they spent about ten minutes talking about the iPad Air 2, they quickly mentioned the iPad Mini 3 and went right into pricing. There is a reason that they just brushed over the iPad Mini 3.

Apple’s iPad Announcement Recap: It’s more than just iPads

By Rich W Woods

Today, Apple had their third annual event behind WWDC and the annual iPhone event. As usual, iPads come in October; however, Apple announced quite a bit more. We heard a lot about iOS 8.1, Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, the iPad Air 2, the iPad Mini 3, a Retina iMac, and a brand new Mac Mini.

Before you read any further, you may want to know that there were no Retina MacBook Airs, Apple TVs, or larger screen iPads.

Finally, a new Mac Mini

By Rich W Woods

Apple announced a whole bunch of new products today. Those include the iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3, and a Retina iMac. There was one more thing that they brushed on. One more thing that hasn’t been updated in years. It’s a new Mac Mini.

There isn’t a whole lot that’s new about the Mac Mini. Mostly, they replaced the third generation Ivy Bridge processors with the fourth generation Haswell processors. Still no mention of Broadwell.

Oh yea, they also dropped the price by $100 so it comes in at $499.

Apple announces a Retina iMac

By Rich W Woods

Apple today has finally announced a long awaited Retina iMac. They boast a 5K display that comes in at 2880p. In case you’re wondering, 4K is 2160p.

The Retina iMac will be 5 mm think. That’s right. It will be a desktop computer that is thinner than an iPad Air 2. The base model will use a 3.5 GHz Core i5 and the high end model will  use a 4 GHz Core i7, so these machines are work horses.

The iMac will start at $2499.
