Windows 9 Leaks: It’s All Here

By Rich W Woods

Boy has it been one heck of a week for Windows 9 or “Threshold” leaks. As Windows Threshold is something that Windows fans are super excited about, the shear amount of leaks of the Technical Preview in the last week would suggest that Microfoft themselves are behind the leaks.

First, we got some photos:

By Rich W Woods

The Nokia Lumia 2520 is now $99 with a 2 year contract from AT&T. This is a great deal considering that tablets usually get $100 off the unlocked price with a 2 year contract but the unlocked price of the Nokia Lumia 2520 is $399.

Nokia Lumia 930 Review

By Rich W Woods

Nokia has been kind enough to give me the opportunity to use the Nokia Lumia 930 for the last two weeks and this is a phone that I have fell absolutely in love with. The design is stunningly beautiful but it was the camera that I fell in love with.

Having used a Nokia Lumia 1020 as my personal phone for about eight months, I thought that the camera on the Nokia Lumia 930 is even better. While the Nokia Lumia 1020 has more megapixels, the Lumia 930 is much faster making camera use a delight.

The Nokia Lumia 930 uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. It has a 5″ 1080p AMOLED display which makes Windows Phone 8.1 bright and colorful. It only has a 32 GB option and has 2 GB RAM. There is no SD card expansion; however, users can easily set OneDrive to automatically backup photos giving the user an extra 15 GB or storage (1 TB for Office 365 subscribers).

The rear camera is 20 MP and the front camera is 1.2 MP which is standard although more and more OEMs are focusing on the front facing camera these days. For example, if you take more selfies than regular photos, you may be better off with a Nokia Lumia 730, Lumia 735, HTC One M8 for Windows, HTC One M8, or OnePlus One which use 5 MP front cameras. In fact, the HTC Desire 820 uses the first 8 MP front facing camera (it is also the first 64 bit Android phone).

The Nokia Lumia 930 also offers wireless charging. This is a great feature if you like to use wireless charging, but it makes the phone heavier (167 g). Personally, I prefer the way they did the Lumia 1020 which didn’t support wireless charging but Nokia offered a case that could be used to make it support wireless charging.

Nokia Lumia 930 vs OnePlus One: Rear Camera Comparison

By Rich W Woods
IMAG0283There is not much that the Nokia Lumia 930 and the OnePlus One have in common. One runs Windows Phone and one runs Android. One uses Snapdragon 800 and the other uses Snapdragon 801. One has a 5″ screen and the other has a 5.5″ screen. One has a 20 MP camera and the other a 13 MP camera. One has a 1.2 MP front camera and the other a 5 MP front camera. One records 1080p video and the other 4K. One is made by one of the oldest, well known cell phone companies and the other is made by a startup that didn’t exist a year ago.

There are a few things that they have in common. They are both unlocked and aren’t sold by any United States cell carriers. They both have a 1080p display. Most importantly, they both have cameras that I fell in love with the moment I used them.

Nokia Lumia 930 Dethrones Nokia Lumia 1020 for Best Camera

By Rich W Woods

I always found the Windows Phone 8 platform to be exciting. iPhones work great, but you can upgrade your iPhone every year when a new one is introduced and never actually feel like you got a new phone. That’s what Windows Phone 8 feels like. New.

From June 2013 through April 2014, my personal phone was a Nokia Lumia 920 and then a Nokia Lumia 1020. Although the photos produced by the Nokia Lumia 1020 are stunning at 41 MP, the phones were slow and frustrating to use. The flagships used Snapdragon S4 processors, the high end processors from a generation and a half ago.

The operating system was nice, until I picked up my iPad or Nexus 7 and realized what a beautiful OS should look like.

Nokia Lumia 730 and 735: The Nokia Tradeoff

By Rich W Woods

I love Nokia phones, but there are certain things that I hate about them. For example, the original flagship Windows Phone 8 phones were using Snapdragon S4 processors. They were slow and frustrating to use. Today they announced the Nokia Lumia 830 which they dubbed “the first affordable flagship” which uses a Snapdragon 400. They went so far as to say that it’s better than Samsung and Apple’s flagship, even though Samsung uses a Snapdragon 801 and Apple uses a 64 bit A7.

Now comes the Nokia Lumia 730 and 735. These phones will also use a Snapdragon 400 processor but they will be the first Nokia phones to use a 5 MP front facing camera.

Nokia Lumia 830: The First Affordable Flagship

By Rich W Woods

The Nokia Lumia 830 has finally been announced and it has been called the first affordable flagship.

It will start at 330 Euros but the specs aren’t entirely clear.

It will have a 10 MP camera and the standard Nokia 1.2 MP front facing camera. The processor wasn’t clear. All they said was “quad core processor” which could mean the low end Snapdragon 200 or the high end Snapdragon 801.
